The World Strongman Championship in Dubai were held on March 28, 2024 in a new single distance format: athletes competed in random pairs. This format, according to Vladimir Burdun, the President of the International Union of World Strongman, was developed with the aim of presenting the sport of strongman in the Olympic movement.

The prospects for recognition of strongman sport were discussed with world sports leaders who visited the World Championships: Ivo Ferriani, member of the IOC Executive Committee, President of the SportAccord; Stefan Fox, President of the Alliance of Independent Members of Sports (AIMS); Julia Govinden, President of United Through Sport (UTS). The distinguished guests provided explanations of the current situation, stages and principles of joining the Olympic movement at the annual general meeting of the International Union of World Strongman.

The World Strongman event was attended by representatives from 42 countries. The Dubai Sports Council’s support for the World Strongman Championships underscored the UAE’s commitment to innovation as one of the world’s leading sporting destinations. The organizing operator was Emirates Sports Group.

– among women U75, Brendali Theron from South Africa/UAE won (10 points), Natalya Kuznetsova from Russia (8 points) was in second place, Fatma Mohamed El-Gazzar from Egypt was in third place (6 points);

   – among men in the U95 category, Vladlen Valyaev from Russia won (35 points), second place was Sahib Bahirov from Azerbaijan (34 points), third place was Artem Mironov from Russia (31 points);

– among men in the U110 category, Leonty Miroshnik from Russia won (30 points), second place Alexey Kosterin from Russia (28 points), third place Roman Druzhinin from Russia (26 points).

Then on Sunday 2 October at the Whale Festival, it will be all action as the best Strongmen in the Western Cape will do battle in three grueling events!!

Introducing 2 of the best Hermanus Strongmen, Nic Lotter and Apologise Mncube, both of whom have been inducted in the SA World Strongman Hall of Fame. Nic the near perfect athlete with complete upper and lower body strength, with added speed and mobility. Apologies is the SA version of Mark Felix, a man that simply gets better with time, always in a state of excellent conditioning. Together these 2 athletes have for well more than a decade competed and even dominated the local circuit. Often one sees an athlete competing in Strongman, almost obsessively dedicating a season to the sport, dieting and training single mindedly. ….

WORLD STRONGMAN established acting branch in China – the CSF China Strongman Federation continues to push for the development of the sport and a competition league.  Head of CSF Mark Soo is informing: The first Shenzhen’s Strongest held in late April in southern China, Guangdong Province by Lifton and endorsed by CSF will become a regular in the competition calendar. The contest gathered local and foreign athletes that competed in a series of disciplines including Monster Dumbbell, Sandbag Carry, Log Press, Stone to Shoulder and Farmers Carry.  Another first is the Feel Good Fest- Strongman Challenge held in Shanghai by CSF also saw athletes take on disciplines such as Yoke Carry, Viking Press and the Apollon Wheel Elephant Bar deadlift. Both events drew big crowds with an amazing energy and were popular with the ladies as well! Good times and lots of fun, many of whom this was their first contest!

Exercises:
Qualification: time limit 60 seconds.

The tire stands on the starting position vertically. At the judge signal the Athlete pushes the tire forward, after the tire takes a horizontal position on the floor, the counting of the flipping is conducted. Athletes who could not turn over the tire the proper number times in the allotted time limit, the result is the number of overturns.

The athlete, after the starting signal of the judge, raises the log-lift from the floor, fixing over his head (1 sec). Elbows and knees should be straight, feet are in one line. It is forbidden to hold the log-lift on the head, in time of lifting from the chest and the removing both hands from the projectile during the execution. After the judge order, the athlete puts back the gear to its original position.

The athlete takes suitcases in both hands and by the judge’s signal starts moving forward.  At the end of the exercise the athlete should carry out the suitcases over the finish line completely.

Final: time limit 90 sec

The athlete approaches to the carousel, takes the pipe from below into the bent hands and by the signal of the judge lifts the carousel from the ground, starts to move the carousel forward in a circle. The goal of the athlete is to move as far as possible.  The result is fixed at the first putting down of the equipment on the floor.

Accessories are behind the starting line. At the signal of the judge, the athlete takes the bag and overcomes the distance of 20m, completely bringing the bag over the finish line, returns to the start and carries one more bag, returns to the starting line and accomplish the thrust of the sleigh (back movement).  The winner is the athlete who will complete the task as fast as possible.

The athlete, after the judge’s start signal, raises equipment from the floor, fixing over his head (1 sec). Elbows and knees should be straight, feet in one line. After the judge’s order, the athlete returns the equipment to the starting position.

The atleet sits in an emphasis, takes on a rope and, from the sitting position, begins to pull the cargo from start to finish position. The winner is the athlete who will overcome the distance at the shortest time. If the athlete does not fit into the time limit set, the distance which the athlete pulled the cargo is measured; in this case the advantage is given to the athlete who passed a greater distance.
